Effects of Prolonged Exposure for PTSD: A Pilot Study
Choi Yun-Kyeung

Abstract
Although prolonged exposre therapy(PE) has been shown to be effective for posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD), there is a lack of empirical studies on the efficacy of PE in Korean patients with PTSD. The purpose of the present study was to test the effect of PE in the treatment of PTSD. PE consists of 8-12 weekly treatment sessions that are generally 90 minutes each. Of twelve trauma survivors with DSM-IV diagnosis of a PTSD, nine(75.0%) completed a manualized intervention. Outcomes were measured using the Posttraumatic Stress Diagnostic Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, the White Bear Suppression Inventory and Self-Esteem Scale. At post-treatment compared to pre-treatment, significant improvements occurred in PTSD, depression symptoms, thought suppression and self-esteem, yielding large effect size gains. These beneficial effects were maintained at 3-month follow-up. Limitations of the current study and implication for future research were discussed.
